In todays world, we’re all sales people.. We’re selling ourselves everyday, at work and even at home.
Now, being a good salesperson is not something you’re born with. Obviously there are the ‘naturals’. I personally know a few sales people that selling for them is as natural as breathing. They don’t need to do anything special to become great at sales. They just need to be themselves.
But what about the rest of us? Well, it doesn’t mean that if you’re not natural, you cannot become a successful sales person.
Here are 5 simple habits that separate successful sales people from the rest. Whether you are selling your own product or are managing a sales team, these are the most effective things you can do to close more deals:
1. Make a good first impression
Researchers are still arguing on what’s the exact time a first impression takes. But everyone agrees that it’s a matter of seconds and not minutes.
And you never get a second chance for a first impression.
Take an extra look in the mirror next time you’re going out for a meeting, or when you’re getting ready in the morning.
Keep in mind: it’s important to look sharp and speak well during first meetings with customers and prospects, because that’s how you’ll be remembered.
2. Keep a positive attitude.
Life is a roller coaster. No matter what happened to you today, will happen tomorrow or happened yesterday, the only influence you have upon controlling these events is your attitude towards it.
Some days can be really taunting and make you feel miserable, either if it’s professional or personal matters, it doesn’t matter. You have to keep on that big smile and remember that eventually everything will turn out for the best.
Even if you lost that great partnership or huge sale.. Learn to let it go and deal with it later, when you set a special time for it.
Customer and prospects want to associate themselves with enthusiastic and optimistic people. It’s easier for them to connect with positive people and to trust that they will take their business into the right place.
3. Listen to your customers.
Or in a word. LISTEN.
I don’t think I can emphasize that enough. People love talking, especially about themselves (or their business). The ability to listen can improve your overall sales closing rate dramatically.
If you’ll learn to listen to your customer and really understand his needs, you’ll be able to explain why you’re product is the most suitable to solve his problems. Furthermore, after you let your customer speak and explain his issues, he will be in a more receptive mode.
Asking questions will help you understand what is important to your customers and the level of importance for each issue. The information collected will put you in a position of strength in closing the business.
4. Get Focused
In today’s world, we’re all constantly chasing our own tails. Multi-tasking 10 different tasks while juggling a few other ideas in our heads. The thing is, working on more than one thing at a time actually wastes valuable time.
When we switch from one task to another, it takes our brain time to readjust and focus, precious time is lost in the changeover.
Basically, the conclusion is: if you want to become instantly more productive, do one thing at a time.
5. Never give up.
We all have our failures. It can be big or small, but we all fail from time to time. Winston Churchill once said: “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm”.

In order to succeed we must try. And when we’re trying, we have to take into consideration that we might fail. Well, that’s part of the process.
So you’ve failed. Now what? Try again. And again. Until you succeed. The temptation to give up will always be there, but YOU don’t have that luxury.
Giving up is not an option for those who wish to become successful.
